What is the DALF C2?
The DALF C2 is the highest level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It certifies an expert, nuanced use of French: the holder understands with ease practically everything they read or hear, reconstructs facts and arguments coherently, and expresses themselves spontaneously, fluently and precisely, including in complex situations.
It is a rare and prestigious diploma, mainly taken by teachers of French, translators, and managers working in French in a diplomatic, academic or cultural context.
Structure of the DALF C2 exams
| Exam | Duration | Mark |
|---|---|---|
| Reading comprehension and written production — 1 exercise (collective) | 3 h 30 | /50 |
| Listening comprehension and oral production — 3 exercises (individual) | 30 min (+1 h of preparation) | /50 |
| Total | 4 h (excluding 1 h of oral preparation) | /100 |
Unlike the DELF and the DALF C1, the C2 has only 2 exams but each one combines reception and production, based on long and complex authentic documents.
Minimum pass mark: 50/100 overall with 10/50 minimum per exam.
Fields offered
At registration, the candidate chooses between two fields for the written production:
- Humanities — writing a structured article from a set of documents
- Sciences — synthesis and stance-taking from scientific documents
Typical audience
- Teachers of French as a foreign language (FLE)
- Translators and interpreters into/from French
- PhD candidates and researchers working in French
- Managers and international civil servants
- Anyone wishing to certify an expert command of French
How to prepare
There is no "recipe" method at this level: it takes continuous immersion in educated French. Regular reading (Le Monde, Le Figaro, specialist journals), demanding listening (France Culture, parliamentary debates, lectures), and practice in long, reasoned writing. Preparation generally lasts between 1 and 2 years for a candidate already solid at C1.
