What is the DALF C1?

The DALF C1 (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française, level C1) certifies an advanced independent level. The candidate understands long and demanding texts, grasps implicit meaning, and expresses themselves spontaneously and fluently without having to search for words. They use the language effectively and flexibly in their social, professional or academic life.

The DALF C1 permanently exempts its holder from any later French test for access to French universities — a major advantage for international students.

Structure of the DALF C1 exam

ExamDurationMark
Listening comprehension (CO) — 2 exercises40 min/25
Reading comprehension (CE) — 1 exercise50 min/25
Written production (PE) — 2 exercises2 h 30/25
Oral production (PO) — 2 parts30 min (+1 h of preparation)/25
Total4 h 30 (of which 4 h collective)/100

The first three tests are collective and take place on the same day; the oral production is individual, before two examiners. The written production has two exercises: a synthesis of 220 to 240 words and a reasoned text of at least 250 words. The oral consists of a prepared monologue followed by an interaction exercise.

Minimum pass mark: 50/100 overall with 5/25 minimum per exam.

What makes the C1 demanding

  • The synthesis of several documents (often 3–4 sources) into one structured text
  • Command of registers of language (formal, standard, colloquial)
  • The ability to argue with nuance — no binary positions
  • The specialised vocabulary of the chosen field (Humanities or Sciences)

Who is the DALF C1 for?

  • Students aiming for a selective master's in France (Sciences Po, ENS, top-tier business school)
  • Teachers and trainers of French as a foreign language
  • Managers and intellectual professions working in France
  • Anyone wishing to certify their higher level of French for good

How long does it take to prepare?

A candidate who is solid at B2 aims for C1 after 200 to 400 additional hours of targeted preparation. Allow at least 6 months of regular practice on synthesis and structured oral production.
