Can You Pay for the DELF with the CPF? A Clear Answer

No: the DELF cannot be paid for with the CPF. Registering for the exam on GoDELF is not eligible for the Compte Personnel de Formation, and neither is a training course whose purpose is to cover the DELF. If you landed on this page hoping to use your CPF rights for your exam, it is better to know straight away: you will need to plan for another method of payment.

That does not mean your CPF is useless when it comes to French. There is a French-language certification that is eligible: the DCL. Below we explain the difference between the two, then how registration for the DELF or the DALF is actually paid for.

Why the DELF Is Not Covered by the CPF

The DELF and the DALF are official diplomas of the French Ministry of National Education, administered by France Éducation International. That is what gives them their value: they are recognised internationally, valid for life, and issued by the French State.

It is also what explains their status with regard to the CPF. The Compte Personnel de Formation exists to fund training and certain certifications. The DELF is a diploma that certifies a level of language: you are not enrolling in a training path, you are sitting an exam, on a given day, in an accredited centre. The logic is different, and the DELF does not fall under that scheme.

The question often comes up about preparation too. The answer is the same: a course whose purpose is to cover the DELF is not eligible for CPF funding either. If a provider tells you otherwise, ask exactly what the funding application would cover, and check for yourself on your CPF account before committing.

The DCL: The French Certification That Is Eligible

The DCL (Diplôme de Compétence en Langue) is eligible for CPF funding. It is a different French-language certification, separate from the DELF and the DALF.

So the choice between them depends less on funding than on what you actually need. If you need the DELF — for a specific file, an administrative procedure, an enrolment, an application that names it explicitly — no other diploma will replace it, and you will have to fund it another way. If your goal is mainly to have your level of French recognised in a context where the DCL is accepted, then the CPF question becomes relevant again.

One simple piece of advice: look first at exactly what is being asked of you, then think about funding. Many candidates do the opposite and end up with the wrong certification.

Using Your CPF to Improve Your French

For the DELF and the DALF, payment is made online, by bank card, at the time of registration. There is no funding application to put together beforehand and no approval delay to wait through: you choose your session, you pay, your registration is recorded.
