What Is the DELF A1?

The DELF A1 (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française – Level A1) is the first level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It represents a “discovery” level: at this stage, you can communicate simply in everyday situations — introducing yourself, asking basic questions, or talking about your surroundings.

  • introduce myself and others using simple phrases;
  • ask and answer basic questions about where I live, people I know, and things I have;
  • write short, simple messages like postcards and fill in forms with personal details;

  • interact in a simple way if the other person speaks very slowly, clearly, and is ready to help.

How does the exam work?

The DELF A1 exam evaluates four main skills, each worth 25 points, for a total of 100 points:

  • Listening ( /25 ) → listening to very short, simple announcements and conversations about familiar topics.
  • Reading ( /25 ) → reading very short, simple texts: signs, notices, short messages, forms.
  • Writing ( /25 ) → completing simple forms and writing short, basic messages: postcards, notes.
  • Speaking ( /25 ) → answering simple questions about yourself, where you live, people you know, and things you have.

 

How to Pass the DELF A1

  • Score at least 50/100.
  • Score at least 5/25 in each of the four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking).
